Jean Lord (SI Rishton & Great Harwood) sent some photos taken at their Festivals. Jean writes:
"Yesterday our club members took part in the 'Rishton Festival'. Two years ago a new group was formed 'The Friends of Rishton Youth'. The aim of the group was to include young people in activities.
Dorothy Casey (our President elect) is Head Teacher at a Rishton Primary
school and has always been concerned about the welfare of children.
Dorothy joined the association as did Beryl Timmins another member.

"It was decided this year to hold a 'Festival' in August. We have had lovely weather all last week-- what did we get yesterday Rain -- Rain -- Rain !!!. However the event went as planned.
"We had a parade through most of the streets of Rishton. A great effort was made by all to make fancy dress costumes. What a shame all got so wet.

"We finished in a field at the back of a school where all kind of activities took place, wall climbing, running, and many voluntary groups had 'stalls' as we did.

Next week we are having a 'Jarbola Stall' at Great Harwood Charter Fair Anniversary. This will be a 'big - do' this year, so we are hoping for the best. Watch this space !!!

"In the parade were a Jazz Band, a Silver Band a few Scottish Pipers, men on stilts, people dressed in fancy costumes, the Town Crier of course and the Mayor and Mayoress.
"The main road was lined with stalls, from various associations, Churches, Rotary and of course Soroptimist selling all kinds of goods. We had our Jarbola. We have a wooden stall which comes out for these affairs courtesy of Jean Aspdens husband and Beryl Timmins husband who erect it for us. Jim Asdpen stores it in a commercial garage.

"We moved our stall to catch more customers.

"Glass jars of all sizes are collected by our members who also put something in the jar. Amazing what a variety we come up with. A raffle ticket number is fastened onto each jar, the corresponding number in a bag. People are asked for fifty pence for a dip in the bag, best of all they get a 'prize' each time. We had over two hundred jars - all went. We also sold all the kitchen goods left over from last week's (Rishton Festival) stall. It was a smashing event bringing together all the town's people and many from other nearby towns. The profits from all the stalls will be going to charities."
"The top of the hills shown is 1100 ft. above sea level. Over the crest the moorland continues and then falls towards the Irwell Valley where S.I. Ramsbottom is located some seven miles from Darwen. Ramsbottom is approx 16 miles north of Manchester centre."
