"Thirty one Soroptimist clubs in District 2 of the NW Region of SIA are planning our Saturday of Service for 3/04/06 - a Community Baby Shower.   We will be doing this in Oregon in partnership with the Department of Human Services.   The 'gifts' will be distributed by the DHS offices throughout Oregon to help those who need a hand at this special time - those babies and moms who don't have showers or get baby gifts.   These are families who sometimes do not have the basic items for babies, such as shampoo, diapers, baby soap, blankets etc.   They do not have the money to buy these things, and these are things that are not covered by the various programs offered by the Department of Human Services.

"It was a beautiful balmy 28 instead of the 40's we have been having.   We cleaned up an area of Brighton Beach and found the usual suspects; lots and lots of plastic, tennis balls, biros, broken glass,a pair of knickers (boys), 2 thongs - you know those flip flop things you wear on your feet, 4 needle covers but so very hopeful to us, no syringes.   We had a very happy morning enjoying the cool sea breeze, lots of chat and laughter & more importantly helping to clean up our beautiful country."

"We may have two prospective members because of the exercise which makes it all worth while."

Linda Beddows wrote a report for the newspapers.

Linda's writeup for the local Press follows: "Saturday’s snow and cold did not deter the members of Soroptimist International of the Fylde, who set up an exhibition in one of the blue domes in St Annes Square. The exhibition was to raise awareness of International Women’s Day which takes place on 8 March and was both a celebration of women’s role in society and a plea for help for women in distress. Amnesty International and Fylde Coast Women’s Aid, with whom the Soroptimists work closely, were also represented by the displays of posters and photographs.

" Among projects highlighted were Women and Domestic Violence, Women Survivors of War, Breast Cancer Awareness, Trafficking of Women and Children and also the Soroptimist International President’s Appeal – Roll back malaria – which highlights the number of women and children killed by malaria who could be saved by the simple provision of bed nets."
