women weavers in the Taranaki region.
"Kathy stayed with Barbara Milburn for the dinner and was shown the Chatline
correspondence and the web pages etc with all the happenings etc. She was
very enthusiastic, so I am hoping she will be joining us online soon!" ---Sheilah Downs

"On August 27th SI Upper Hutt held a celebratory 30th Jubilee Dinner. Like SI Bosporus we had an attendance of almost 100.(93) to be exact.
The evening took the form of the usual formalities, dinner and then a fashion parade with a difference.

"Phyllis Illes, our second president is a quilter, painter, dress designer and dressmaker. She assembled and compared a parade of women’s clothes showing the changing women’s fashions of the past two decades. The clothes were modeled by four of our “slimmer” club members.

A Post Script from Barbara:
" A friend who is also a reporter for the Hutt News just showed me the snaps that she took of the evening. Could you possibly put this one also on your web site? I think it sums up the fun we had that night!
Shown on the right: Hot Pants of the Fifties
"Gillian Buchanan, a past president, modelling hot pants. Even Gillian could not keep a straight face. She received the loudest applause of the evening!"
"A bonus was that as I was hosting the President of the Central Region (Kathy Glass) overnight I was able to show her recent emails on the Chatline. She was so impressed, she immediately asked if she could join. I will make sure she follows through.
"To fellow Hutt Valley Chatliners, Sheilah and Elaine, many thanks for you and your Club’s support for the celebration of our 30 years work in the Upper Hutt Community."

"I would like to add to Barbara’s comments about the 30th Birthday celebration of SI Upper Hutt.
"The club has a proud record of achievement in serving their local community and our global community. In these activities Barbara has played a truly significant part. She makes things happen, and has original ideas for fund raising and community service activities. Her ideas have included serving the old, as in having a health day for seniors, with free medical checkups, and the sustained support of a talented young woman musician.
"The evening was very well attended and the dress parade brought back memories of some important events in people’s lives. Do chatliners associate certain clothes or styles with certain events? E.g. weddings, funerals, graduations, etc?
"As well as enjoying a celebration this event opened other doors. The Deputy Mayor also attended and I was able to chat to her informally about another subject dear to my heart. The Te Omanga Hospice, based in Lower Hutt, is wanting to open an Op. Shop (second hand goods and clothes) in the Upper Hutt area which the hospice also serves and I was able to arrange for a hospice representative to meet with the city development officer to find a location. So this celebration was not only fun, but it sparked another opportunity for community service. A double wammy as we say. How often this happens at Soroptimists events!"
