In the Vergelegen Cardiac Ward - by Hendré Falkson
Photos by Lexa Garbers

I expected much less attention from the nursing staff when I was transferred from the ICU to the Cardiac Ward. However, what a pleasant surprise! The staff of the Cardiac ward were as compassionate and caring as could be desired.
There were no longer tubes and lines attached to me, but the nurses regularly manually monitored my vital signs. They constantly checked if I needed anything and once again the treatment was kind and dedicated.
I have never encountered more humane treatment than what I experienced at Vergelegen. My stay in the ICU and ward was memorable - the joy derived during the 3-week period far outweighed the stress and anxiety during that time.

An important member of the team
The physiotherapist plays an important role in getting the patient's lungs post-operatively, to function optimally. This already starts in the ICU. Helping the patient to regain muscle power and to start walking again after a prolonged period in bed is another aspect of the physiotherapist's important role in the process of a patient's healing.
