On the 29th of February, the Israeli Union celebrated the chartering of one of the first Soroptimist Clubs in Israel in Haifa.   The SI/E incoming President, Monique Riviere, came for a short visit to Israel and also for the celebration of the Haifa Club's 50th anniversary.

" I tried to find out how it came about that the Club was chartered on the 29th of February.    Well, as it turned out this date was chosen because it is the birthday of Mina Ben-Zvi who was one of the founding members.    Mina was an extraodinary woman.    She was the first woman commander of the women's troops in the Israeli army in 1948.   Later she was the founder and first manager of the Golda Meir Mount Carmel Training Center, which now for over 40 years educates and teaches people from developing countries - mainly."
