SI of Karratha & Districts Saturday of Service: HARD YAKKA
Sent by Judy Wright (President, SI Karratha, Western Australia) via Marlene Brooke:

Soroptimist International of Karratha and Districts joined together for Saturday of Service on the 20 th March
2004 to remove labels from near new King Gee and Yakka work clothing donated by a Multi National
Mining Company in Karratha. The industrial work wear was no longer serviceable for their employees but
too “new” to discard and so they were donated to a worthy cause. SI of K&D armed with disposable razors
and quick unpicks spent four hours removing embroidered logos from the work clothing to enable them to
pass them onto local “needy” groups. The local High schools have been targeted for the use of much of the
clothing for when they send their students out on work experience. Indigenous Groups will also receive a gift
of work clothing.
The Soroptimist sisters spent a pleasant afternoon networking and enjoying great fellowship
whilst unpicking approximately 200 articles of apparel, namely Overalls, shirts and work pants.

DOUBLE DUTY for SOS
Helen Marsonet, Attached Member of SI Tuggerah Lake, New South Wales, Australia, sent in two photos to go with her report:
Marlene Brooke extracted the following from the main report:
Helen Marsonet and 2 residents in the Aged Care Facility
"Helen assisted in nursing/care duties at Ada Cottage, an aged care/high need facility for 10 residents, from 9 am till 4 pm. She assisted residents to fill in a Government Survey, which required an independent person to carry out and took about 2 hours. The SOS T-shirt prompted interest and she gave them a brief outline and explanation of SOS and SI which impressed staff and residents. Having been trained in Dementia care, she enjoyed being back in gear again. She plans to volunteer regularly as it is challenging and personally rewarding. The nurse in charge was grateful for assistance as there is only one on duty at weekends.

Next day, Helen and Bruno joined the Clean up Australia group of 10 volunteers. They worked at the picturesque Rocky Waterhole on the Cudgegong River. Most of the rubbish was broken glass as the young people delight in drinking their beer and soft drink, then smashing the glass on the rocks.
They found an old boot, a rubber glove and the remains of a pair of
men's underpants.
SI Goulburn (Region of New South Wales, Australia)
Photos sent by Meryl Caldwell-Smith, Report from Marlene Brooke
SI Goulburn's plan to help develop the sensory garden was 'washed away' by the torrential rain which started about half an hour into their gardening; so they did some early tidying up around the play area in the courtyard enclosed by the buildings then opted for indoor activities.
"SOS at the Crescent School (school for special purposes) - Rain just started !"
Indoors, ten members with one hardworking teenage daughter were also soon awash! Using soapy disinfectant, wearing plastic aprons and gloves they washed over play surfaces, plastic covered wedges, cubes and drum shaped foam; the colourful tactile boards with their attached multitude of shapes; and the largest job - the 3,000 balls in the ball pit. All were removed in clothes baskets, handled in the foaming baths, then individually dried and emptied into a new pit.

Staffer Anne, who had worked alongside them throughout, provided a welcome 'cuppa' with buttered scones when they finished.
Anne will be receiving a cheque for $600 on behalf of the school at Goulburn's Birthday Dinner on 20th March.
SI Leicester (Midlands East Region, UK)
Christine Sanderson-Fagan of SI Leicester sent 2 photos via Kate Moore.
Christine writes:" LeicesteHERday is an annual celebration marking International Women's Day in Leicester.

"Leicester has a tremendous diversity of cultures and this event provides a unique forum for bringing together women from many ethnic backgrounds and professions to share experiences."

SI Malaysia Region from Indrani Manuel (SI Damansara)
Indrani writes:" The region of Malaysia which consists of 12 clubs undertook a 'Treasure Hunt' which took nearly seven hours to complete from Kuala Lumpur on the west coast to Kuantan on the East Coast of the Peninsula. Many members of the public joined us and we had a convoy of 30 cars with Soroptimist labels and flags. Publicity materials on Soroptimism were included in the goody bags and questions on Soroptimism were the order of the day. Themed 'From West to East' the Treasure Hunt coincided with the SOS day for 24 hours of global service by Soroptimists worldwide.
This year we selected a day care Centre for special children in Kuantan where children who have been intellectually and physically challenged are sent by their parents. They come from underprivileged backgrounds where both parents need to work. A collection from all members was taken and goodies and hampers from members and clubs were donated to the home. The president of SI Kuantan and members who are on the ground will overlook the work done here. Soroptimists will continue to support this Centre as there are two SI Clubs here.
SI New Plymouth @ Mission has sent this report and photos:
Thanks to Marlene Brooke for sending it for the Web publishing.

They write:
"SI New Plymouth@Mission members provided afternoon tea and entertained residents of the Mission Rest Home.
The theme they chose was 'My Fair Lady' which residents certainly related to and they particularly appreciated the wonderful hats worn by the ladies.
Our group look forward to next years 'Saturday of Service' which is an opportunity for us to raise awareness through newspaper publicity and it is certainly a fun and rewarding occasion."

SI MURRAY BRIDGE, Region of South Australia
Report and Photo received from Marlene Brooke
SI MURRAY BRIDGE report that last year they celebrated their first Saturday of Service by volunteering to take part in the State programme of KESAB (Keep South Australia Beautiful) campaign. Since then, in March, June, September and December, they have continued to be part of this campaign. This year they decided that the March clean
up day would again be their Saturday of Service for environmental
protection, cleanliness, to stop rubbish from cluttering and blocking storm water drains and to prevent as far as possible any kind of rubbish getting into their River Murray.
Members of SI Murray Bridge SOS Team
At 7.30 am on Saturday 6th March six Soroptimists met at the start of their 2 km area. They worked down to the river, along the river bank and tourist area. They were equipped
with KESAB materials consisting of environmentally acceptable disposable bags, protective gloves and metal tongs. One member drove on ahead and erected 2 signs warning motorists that volunteers were walking along the road cleaning up and there wore red vests. They finished the job and were back at Pauline's house shortly after 9 am where they enjoyed a champagne breakfast.
This activity strengthens the Club because they get together to do a job and enjoy each other's company. Members often drive past the river to check for rubbish. Thus storm drains are less likely to be blocked and cause areas of flooding and less rubbish enters the river because of their efforts. Clubs in South Australia can be involved by contacting KESAB.
